SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (D-Van Nuys) presented ACR 91 in the Assembly this week in celebration of "Nowruz," the Persian New Year. The California State Assembly joined the Persian community throughout the state in celebrating March 20, 2014, as the beginning of the Persian New Year and extends best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous Nowruz to all Californians.
The commencement of the New Year marks the beginning of Spring, which usually falls on March 20th. Nowruz is celebrated and observed in Iran, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Trans Caucus region.
"Over half of all Iranian immigrants live in the state of California, a number greater than the Iranian populations in the next 20 states combined," stated Assemblymember Nazarian. The Assemblymember continued by noting the importance of recognizing Nowruz, highlighting the contributions that the Persian-American community has made throughout the course of the past 40 years as an important immigrant community in California. "Whether it be their creation of innovative technology start-ups in Silicon Valley like "E-Bay", or leading NASA's historic "Mars Exploration Rover" program, or transforming Downtown Los Angeles's garment district into a multi-billion dollar industry, the contributions of the Iranian American community for California are a large part of what makes our state the envy of other states and other countries," stated Nazarian.
ACR 91 enjoyed overwhelming success, passing the Assembly Floor with strong support.
Prominent members from the Persian-American community of California, including doctors, professors, businessmen and community leaders, traveled to Sacramento to witness the landmark resolution, the first of its kind in the State Legislature. The invited guests were recognized by Assemblymember Nazarian and were able to witness the presentation from the Assembly Floor.
Upon adjournment of session, guests made their way to Assemblymember Nazarian's, "Nowruz" reception, where they met with legislators over traditional Persian cuisine, overlooking the "haft-seen table," in celebration of this ancient tradition.
Nazarian represents the 46th Assembly District, serving the San Fernando Valley communities of Hollywood Hills, Lake Balboa, North Hills, North Hollywood, Panorama City, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Universal City, Van Nuys, and Valley Village.
