(Los Angeles, CA) Last night, Assemblymember Nazarian (D-Van Nuys), Chair of the California Legislative Armenian Caucus released the following statement addressing Azerbaijan’s attacks on Artsakh.
“On Sunday, September 27 Azerbaijan launched a large-scale unprovoked attack on the Republic of Artsakh, targeting civilians, families, and children including the capital, Stepanakert. This violence against the Armenian people is a continuation of the heinous crimes committed during the genocide over 100 years ago.
The United States and other world powers cannot continue to ignore these crimes against the Armenian people. While western global leaders ask for “peace” Turkey has provided arms and even transported Syrian mercenaries to Azerbaijan to fight with Aliyev’s army. Armenia is a thriving democracy, growing stronger each year. We know who the aggressors are and it is time that the international community acknowledges their complicity in these attacks. It's time the Western powers stopped prioritizing a few cheap barrels of oil over human life and peace.
This conflict stretches beyond the Caucasus borders, as several hate crimes against the Armenian diaspora community were perpetrated here in California over the last few weeks. Those who claim this dispute was instigated by Armenia, look no further than the bullet holes shot through Krouzian-Zekarian-Vasbouragan Armenian School in a drive-by shooting last weekend or the burned remnants of St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church caused by arson damage. The very countries that are saying that Armenia is the aggressor are committing terror here in San Francisco.
Just last October I was in Artsakh, in the very city that was attacked yesterday, at an international peace conference with more than 150 delegates from over 30 countries working on creating a stable peace for the future. We will see peace when others join me in fervently demanding that the Azeri attacks stop. While social media has been restricted in Azerbaijan, an effort historically made by dictators and authoritarians, I ask you to please demand action and peace from the US government.”
