Jesse Gabriel Appointed as Majority Whip of the California State Assembly

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Woodland Hills) was appointed Majority Whip of the California State Assembly by Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood). A key member of the leadership team, the Majority Whip works with the Speaker, the Majority Leader, and the Assistant Whips to advance the legislative agenda of the Democratic Caucus. The position of Majority Whip was previously held by former Assemblymember Todd Gloria, who was sworn-in last week as the new Mayor of San Diego.

“I’m grateful to Speaker Rendon for the opportunity to serve as Majority Whip at this critical moment, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass a robust legislative agenda that addresses the biggest challenges facing California,” said Assemblymember Gabriel. “We have a difficult road ahead of us, but I am confident that we can make a real difference for folks in the San Fernando Valley and across our state.”

“Assemblymember Gabriel’s elevation to this position is a reflection of his determined and steadfast work,” said Speaker Rendon. “Though he’s been in the Assembly only since 2018, he has demonstrated his capacity to join the leadership team. I look forward to his contributions.”

In addition to his appointment as Majority Whip, Gabriel also was recently elected by his colleagues to serve as the Chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus.

Jesse Gabriel was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2018. Shortly after assuming office, he was appointed as Assistant Majority Whip. In 2019, Gabriel was one of 100 leaders from across the state recognized as a "California Influencer" by The Sacramento Bee. During his first full term in the State Assembly, Gabriel authored nine bills that were signed into law by Governor Newsom, including highly-regarded measures to expand legal services for low-income Californians and protect communities at risk of hate-motivated violence.
