Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel Respond to Governor’s May Revision

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA — On Friday, Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) and Assembly Budget Committee Chair Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino) released the following joint statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s “May Revision” budget proposal:

“We warned in January that the state’s budget problem was serious and would require many difficult choices. These tough decisions have arrived. We are encouraged that the Governor’s May Revision improves budget prospects for future years and saves rainy-day reserves. Nobody knows what challenges California may face, so we must always stay prepared. At the same time, we acknowledge the gravity of the proposed cuts. The Assembly will continue to fight to protect core programs for California’s most vulnerable residents and essential classroom funding. We remain committed to transparency and spending oversight, with several hearings scheduled, and will work with the Governor, Pro Tem and our legislative colleagues on a budget that delivers for hard-working Californians.”
